Adobe has announced plans to launch a free web-based application next year, designed to empower creators of images and videos by ensuring they receive recognition in the realm of AI usage. The initiative, known as “Content Credentials,” acts as a digital watermark, providing crucial information about the origin of photos and videos circulating online.
Since 2019, Adobe, alongside other tech giants, has been developing this technology to enhance transparency regarding content creation. Notably, TikTok, a subsidiary of China’s ByteDance, has committed to implementing Content Credentials to label AI-generated media on its platform.
The service offered by Adobe will enable content creators to digitally mark their works, indicating authorship and expressing their preferences regarding the use of their content in AI training systems. This move comes as various industries confront legal challenges over data usage in AI, with some opting for litigation, such as the New York Times’ lawsuit against OpenAI, while others pursue licensing agreements.
Despite Adobe’s proactive measures, no major AI companies have yet agreed to adopt its transparency framework. However, Adobe remains steadfast in its mission to promote industry-wide acceptance of its standards.
Scott Belsky, Adobe’s Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President for Design and Emerging Products, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “By offering creators a simple, free, and easy way to attach Content Credentials to what they create, we are helping them preserve the integrity of their work, while enabling a new era of transparency and trust online,” he stated.
Following the announcement, Adobe saw a 1.9% uptick in its stock during afternoon trading, signaling positive market reception to this strategic move.
